Choosing Accessory Size

Like furniture, the size of accessories should be taken into consideration before making a purchase. Certain accessories will fit certain rooms better, and size is a big factor in what looks good in a room. Since the furniture has already been chosen, picking out matching accessories is an easier process.

First, consider the size of the room and its furniture. A large room can hold larger accessories as long as they aren’t too big for the furniture you place them close to. A mirror in a large room, for example, can be large as well unless you are hanging it above a small table. Typically accessories should be smaller than the objects they compliment.

Second, consider the space you have. If you have a lot of furniture and are feeling cramped, choose small accessories to help add an artful touch to the space without taking up more room. Choose accessories in light colors or with reflective surfaces to help open up the space. Mirrors are an excellent choice for making a small or crowded area appear larger than it really is.

Finally, consider your own personal tastes. Do you prefer your accessories to make a bold statement, or do you keep things simple and let a few accessories speak for you? Even a large room can look good using only two or three small pieces. The key is to use colors that compliment the room. If the space feels too boring or bland, choose one accessory in a bright color to draw attention to the room’s focal point.
