How Layout Affects a Room

The layout in a room, commonly thought of as the arrangement of the furniture and decorative elements of the room, has an effect not only on the room itself, but the people in the room as well. It can change the mood of a room and can also affect how tense or relaxed you feel when you are in the space.

For example, consider a room where the furniture is all crammed together. That area becomes the focal point and seems too crowded to be comfortable. On the other hand, a room with a small amount of furniture spread too far apart feels empty and cold.

Home owners often throw out furniture or add more to fix these two common problems. This is not a good solution for the room or the home owner, however. The home owner is losing money and the room may still feel uncomfortable. The solution is not more or less furniture, but proper layout.

A quick fix can be achieved by considering space and other furniture in the room. Don’t leave so much space between pieces of furniture that it feels like something used to go there and is now missing. When arranging spaces, work with the room by angling furniture in corners and tucking away pieces into empty areas. Try grouping similar pieces for a cozy feel. Pieces can be similar because of color, type, or size. Look for what makes each piece similar. Once you’ve finished, you can then decide if you truly do need to throw anything away. Chances are, you probably won’t.
