Matching Chairs and Tables

Chairs and tables are key pieces of furniture in a room. They are versatile and can be as plain or as stylish as the decorator wants. Mismatched chairs and tables can throw off the design of a room, however, and great care should be taken to ensure that both function well together.
Contrary to what you might think, the chairs do not have to be identical to the table. Many times a homeowner will buy the table first and purchase the chairs later. It does help if all the chairs match each other, though if they use the same colors and shape you can get away with slightly different designs.
Start by finding a common color that the table and chairs can share. Black and white colors work well not only because they’re easy to match but because they are neutral and go with any other color. Next you’ll want to match the style. If your table is simplistic and modern, look for curved plastic chair without armrests. Classic wooden tables work better with traditional wooden chairs with upholstered seats.
The exception to the rule is a chair that isn’t used at the table. Many people keep a spare chair in one corner of the room for display. If you choose to match this chair to other elements in the room instead of the table it can still work as long as your room is well designed to start with. If you’re using the chair as a functioning piece at the dinner table, however, you’ll want it to match the other chairs.
