The Wave design has been gathering momentum for some time now, and we’re absolutely thrilled that we’re finally able to share it. It’s a beautiful reflection of the quintessential Tom Faulkner style. It blends a curvaceous, free-flowing quality with precise, refined craftsmanship, moulding metal into a thing of beauty and functionality. The result is a contemporary dining table with a sculptural sense of presence designed to be enjoyed for generations.
The design started with a simple gesture. Tom recalls, “Someone once said that ‘a line is the beginning of a conversation,’ and I think that’s very true – you never know where it’s going to lead you…” In this case, a singular stroke undulating across a page has morphed into a full-bodied form. The original line acts as something of a spine to the form which extends from it. It’s a highly unique table base that intrigues from all angles. Glanced from above through a clear glass top, one grasps a sense of its striking simplicity. Viewed from the side, the Wave gathers gravitas, stretching into a rolling expanse of snaking metal.
Bringing this pedestal dining table to life called for expert craftsmanship. Its creation was a slow and steady process of iteration and refinement. Our Wiltshire workshop acted as a laboratory of sorts, where Tom and the team undertook a process of prototyping, deploying tried and tested techniques to develop an entirely new shape. Having pinned down the recipe for success, the Wave is now ready to take on a life of its own in a cast of bespoke variations.
There’s a balance to be struck between a soft, organic look and a solid, precise composition. We begin with sheets of steel which are rolled into form and arranged to fit together like puzzle pieces. They’re then welded to a frame extending from the spine, with any trace of marks erased to create a smooth, continuous quality. The base is softly polished to perfection, priming it for the standard or specialist finish of your choice.
The Wave showcases our custom furniture finishes to particularly stunning effect. The curvature of the base creates variations in tone, playing with light and shadow to evoke a dynamic quality. In opting for a specialist finish like the ‘Moon Silver’ shown here, layers of hand-painted metallic powders and pigments are revealed in all their glory.
Just as Tom’s opening line began the conversation, this contemporary dining table acts as the introduction to a new collection. This iteration of the Wave shape is a harbinger of things to come, with a coffee table currently in development alongside a cast of other creations. It’s been a rewarding process expanding our design lexicon and pushing the boundaries of a material we so enjoy working with. This design is a true reflection of the beauty of metal in all its mutability and strength, marking the latest chapter in Tom’s ever-evolving design practice.
