Finishes and Materials

We have many beautiful finishes for our metalwork, as well as several options on tabletops including different choices of glass, wood and marble.
All of our “specialist” finishes have been created by us and are therefore unique to Tom Faulkner. They are all painstakingly applied by hand by our team of skilled artisans.
We also have a choice of leathers and fabrics for our upholstery.

Standard Finishes

Our standard approach to finishing our steel furniture is a powder coating process which produces a clean, even effect. These finishes are practical and robust, with a fully opaque quality that contributes to a modern look.

Specialist Finishes

We develop our specialist and antique finishes in house, applying each one by hand for optimum effect. Our team uses metal powders, varnishes, and pigments to build a balanced and characterful look which elevates the bespoke quality of our furniture.

Butterfly Finishes

There are five colourways that make up the Papillon collection – all named after butterflies, and they are applied by hand using the powder coating process. This is usually a very industrial process so it is very unusual to do it like this.

Antiqued Mirror

Antiqued glass is an ideal finish for luxury furniture design. The process that goes into making it is intricate and artistic in equal measures. A host of secret artistic techniques are adopted to build up the right level of “aging”. This finish can be used across many furniture pieces – from dining table tops to cabinet door panels.

Bronze and Brass

Some of our designs can be made from Bronze or Brass, and we can offer a variety of different looks by using patinations and hand polishing techniques. A patina is the oxidisation of bronze, which can happen naturally over time, or the process can be sped up by manually heating the surface of the bronze and adding alkaline or acidic salts which helps to create a range of different effects. We treat all of our patinations with a layer of wax which helps to preserve the patina and stop the surface oxidising further.

Moon Finish

Our Moon finish sits somewhere between the antiqued and the industrial. The near alchemical treatment it demands places it in a category of its own.

Leather Upholstery

Leather is a classic finish to an upholstered furniture piece. It ages beautifully and stands the test of time.

Bridle Leathers

Our selection of bridle leathers are oak bark tanned, a gentle traditional English process that protects the natural fibres of the hide. These leathers are suitable for our Balzac desk and Berlin easy chair.

Marble Table Tops - All Tables

Marble is among the most time-honoured decorative materials available. It's a common thread which we can trace through to ancient times, holding up beautifully in many of history's crowning architectural achievements. Today marble is a favoured not only for its practicality and durability, but also its beauty. This natural material is incredibly varied, from sleek monochromatic options to richly veined character marbles. We work with marble, granite, and onyx to craft tabletops for our designs, curating our selection to complement what lays beneath.

The smooth texture and array of vivid hues give the Venetian glass table tops a jewel-like quality which instantly sparks up a space.
